The locusts spread out across about 2,000,000 square miles (5,200,000km 2), while a locust infestation named Albert's swarm in 1875 covered 198,000 square miles (510,000km 2). [1] [4] The United States Entomological Commission wrote in 1880 that the infestation "covered a swath equal to the combined areas of Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont." Locust Hub, part of the Africa Geoportal, is an open-source platform that the FAO has been developing with geographic information system specialist ESRI. Andrew Stauffer, director of the geoportal programme at ESRI, says: “Anybody can create a free account and then use our tools to work with and compare the data.” Users can overlay weather data, soil conditions, evaporation and crop types, as well as locust numbers. “The cool thing about it is that it’s not a snapshot – every time the FAO updates the data, you’re seeing things in real time.” Ben Coes, New York Times bestselling author of international espionage thrillers featuring Dewey Andreas American Bibliographical Center (1979). The hotly anticipated second novel from Terry Hayes, author of the internationally bestselling I am Pilgrim Regarded as “the best book of 2014” ( Suspense Magazine), “a big, breathless tale of nonstop suspense” (Janet Maslin, The New York Times), and “simply one of the best suspense novels I’ve read in a long time” (#1 New York Times bestselling author David Baldacci), Terry Hayes’s masterful thriller I Am Pilgrim was the recipient of countless accolades. Now, with The Year of the Locust, Hayes has penned a breathtaking story about cutting-edge science, a government conspiracy, and one man’s desperate attempt to unravel it all. If, like Kane, you're a Denied Access Area spy for the CIA, then boundaries have no meaning. Your function is to go in, do whatever is required, and get out again - by whatever means necessary. You know when to run, when to hide - and when to shoot.

Technology and large-scale operations aside, locusts remain a very human problem: livelihoods are destroyed by their presence. Farmers deal with many pests themselves but locusts involve specialist knowledge and equipment. A Kansas pioneer was quoted as saying, "They looked like a great, white glistening cloud, for their wings caught the sunshine on them and made them look like a cloud of white vapor". [10] Another Kansas settler said, "I never saw such a sight before. This morning, as we looked up toward the sun, we could see millions in the air. They looked like snowflakes." [11] Farmers tried killing the locusts with fire and exploding gunpowder, and one case resulted in the locusts smothering out the flames. [1] A device called a hopperdozer was used to attempt to stop the infestation. The hopperdozer had a scraper with coal tar that was pulled by horses on fields, but it only worked on flat ground. This device would be dragged against the wind, and young locusts would be blown into the tar, killing them. [12] [13] Results [ edit ] Kane travels there to exfiltrate a man with vital information for the safety of the West - but instead he meets an adversary who will take the world to the brink of extinction. A frightening, clever, vicious man with blood on his hands and vengeance in his heart... Given that a single locust can consume a lettuce overnight, the impact of a whole swarm of them on crops – and on the farmers and communities dependent on those crops – can be devastating.

They beat against the houses, swarm in at the windows, cover the passing trains. They work as if sent to destroy’ Kane travels there to exfiltrate a man with vital information for the safety of the West—but instead he meets an adversary who will take the world to the brink of extinction. A frightening, clever, vicious man with blood on his hands and vengeance in his heart... The spiritual meaning of locusts is often interpreted as a symbol of transformation, regeneration....... It’s the tenth anniversary of the publication of I Am Pilgrim which to my eternal gratitude found a huge audience around the world,” said Hayes in last month’s official press release from Emily Bestler Books, an imprint of Atria Books at publishing powerhouse Simon & Schuster. “To my great relief, I have now completed my new novel, which has been a far longer journey than I anticipated. To say that it’s epic is something of an understatement, but I am incredibly proud of it and even more excited that it has the opportunity to reach an audience at last.”

Terry Hayes is a former journalist and screen-writer. Born in Sussex, England, he migrated to Australia as a child and trained as a journalist at the country’s leading broadsheet. At twenty-one he was appointed North American correspondent, based in New York, and after two years returned to Sydney to become an investigative reporter, political correspondent and columnist.

On this front, though, this year’s weather presented yet another challenge: “The same rainfall that led to the locusts breeding and getting out of control has created a problem for remote sensing because the vegetation has been so much greener than average.” This makes it difficult to compare variation in greenery with previous years. One report released in 1874 suggested that just one family in 10 had enough provisions to last through the coming winter. To avoid starvation, many desperate settlers, especially in western Kansas and Nebraska, abandoned their homestead claims and their dreams of a new life to return east. Kansas alone lost as much as one-third of its population. Meanwhile, the flow of westbound emigrants to the Plains fell by as much as 20 percent. a b Barnes, Simon (2022).
